Frequently Asked Questions

General

Open-source software is built in the open. Its source code is publicly available under a license that lets anyone use, modify, and share it — at no cost. It’s developed and improved by communities of companies and individuals who rely on it themselves. Open source powers nearly every software product in the world, commercial or not. It reduces costs, eliminates vendor lock-in, and connects systems through open interfaces. And it’s a cornerstone of digital sovereignty.
Digital sovereignty means your organization is in full control of its digital systems, data, and technology — without depending on specific vendors, platforms, or foreign governments for critical decisions. Open-source software is a key factor here. At server.camp, lock-in is minimal: no minimum contract periods, and you can request a full data export at any time to migrate to another provider or your own hardware.
server.camp delivers open-source tools with a high degree of automation — keeping availability high and costs low. We donate at least 10% of revenue back to the open-source projects we use. So your subscription directly supports the communities behind the software. Beyond that, we care deeply about fast, honest, and friendly support. We want your experience to stand out.
We love open source. But we noticed too many people defaulting to big-tech solutions — not because they’re better, but because self-hosting can feel daunting. We change that. server.camp brings high-quality open-source software to you as a managed service — with the same convenience and reliability you’d expect from any commercial platform. And we give back: a share of every subscription goes directly to the open-source projects that make it all possible.
Open source makes server.camp possible — so contributing back matters to us. We do this in several ways: we contribute directly to projects, maintain our own open-source work on GitHub, share knowledge through our personal blogs, and donate 10% of revenue to open-source projects that need financial support.
We offer a growing selection of open-source tools we’ve personally tested and stand behind. Don’t see your favorite? Send us a message — we’ll take a look and consider adding it to our lineup.
Most open-source software comes with well-documented, open interfaces — making it straightforward to integrate into your existing infrastructure. The majority of tools we offer support Single Sign-On, so you use one password and log in with a single click. Questions? Reach out.

Tech Talk

If your service’s admin panel doesn’t have an option for custom SMTP credentials, contact our support with the details and we’ll set it up for you. Note that your service will be briefly unavailable during configuration.
Yes. Just update your DNS settings at your domain or DNS provider.

We always run the free, open-source version of each tool by default. If you need the premium version, just ask — additional costs may apply.

We also keep everything up to date. Automated updates run every night at 10 PM, so you always get the latest stable release. No waiting on your hosting provider for features that have already shipped.

Every night, we create encrypted backups of all databases and files, stored at an external location in Falkenstein. Backups are retained for up to six months. Need a restore? Just send us a message.
We use professional server hardware in a data center in Nuremberg with redundant power and network infrastructure. A 24/7 monitoring system alerts us through independent channels the moment something looks off — often before you’d even notice. And we have on-site staff available around the clock for hardware issues.
We’re committed to open source, even for our own stack. Our servers run Debian, configured with Ansible, using Docker for strict, isolated containerization. New service instances are provisioned with Ansible as well. For monitoring, we use Zabbix and Grafana. Support runs on Zammad. And pfSense keeps our network secure.
